If the fondue becomes very vigorous, bubbles too much or seems to boil when it should only be gently heated, the thermostat is probably set too high for the recipe. Fondue settings are indicative, so the ideal level may need adjusting by recipe and ingredient type. Oil, cheese, broth and chocolate all need different temperatures, and the wrong setting can make the contents overheat quickly.
- Turn the thermostat down one step and observe the mixture for several minutes. Expected result: bubbling reduces and the fondue settles to a gentler heat.
- Check that you are using the right setting for the recipe. The manuals list different thermostat positions for chocolate, cheese, broth and oil. Expected result: the contents heat in a way that suits the chosen fondue.
- Make sure the pan is not overfilled. Expected result: the mixture has room to move without splashing or climbing toward the rim.
- Stir carefully if the recipe allows it, especially with cheese or chocolate, to avoid hot spots. Expected result: the temperature becomes more even.
- If the fondue splashes, smokes or looks like it may boil over, switch off, unplug and stop using it until it has cooled. Contact the retailer or store where it was purchased if you cannot achieve safe control.
To reduce repeat problems, preheat ingredients gently in a separate pan where the instructions allow, and add them to the fondue pot only when suitable. Never leave the appliance unattended while it is heating strongly.
