Why does my air styler make an unusual rattling noise?

A light noise from an air styler can happen while it is moving air, but a rattling sound is not something to ignore. Stop and inspect the appliance before continuing, because the noise may be coming from a loose accessory, debris inside the air path or a developing fault.

Check the accessory and inlet area

1. Switch the appliance off and unplug it.
2. Let it cool completely.
3. Remove any fitted attachment and refit it carefully.
4. Look for hair, dust or a loose item near the air inlet or outlet.

If the rattling disappears after refitting or cleaning, the issue was likely external. If it continues even with no attachment fitted, the appliance itself may need further assessment.

Check for signs of damage

1. Inspect the body, plug and cable for cracks or loose parts.
2. Shake the appliance gently only when it is unplugged and cool, to see whether a part is visibly moving inside.
3. Do not use it again if the rattle is accompanied by vibration, smell or poor airflow.

If the sound changes when the cable is moved, stop using the appliance.

When to stop using it

Stop use immediately if you hear grinding, see sparking, smell burning or notice heat from the plug or lead. Do not open the housing or attempt repairs. If the issue remains unresolved, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
