Why does my heater sound weak or uneven when it starts?

A heater can sound slightly different at start-up, but a weak, uneven or scraping sound should never be ignored. A change in sound can point to airflow blockage, dust build-up or a safety issue that needs attention.

1. Check whether the heater is standing correctly and has enough space around it. Restricted airflow can make the sound irregular. The expected result is a steadier sound once the heater has space to draw and release air properly. If it still sounds uneven, continue.
2. Look for dust in accessible openings and remove it gently with a fine brush. The expected result is less noise after the dust is cleared. Do not insert tools into the unit. If the sound remains rough or scraping, continue.
3. Listen for rattling, clicking or contact with furniture, curtains or the floor. The expected result is that moving nearby items away reduces the noise. If the noise is still abnormal, continue.
4. Stop using the heater immediately if the sound is accompanied by a smell of burning, smoke or repeated shut-downs. Those are warning signs, not normal operation.
5. If the heater still sounds faulty after basic checks, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased if the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain.
