Why is the power light on my electric barbecue staying off?

If the power light does not come on, the barbecue may not be receiving mains power, or it may not be connected correctly. Treat this as a safety issue first: stop using the appliance if the cord, plug or base looks damaged, or if there is any smell of burning or visible moisture.

What to check

1. Confirm the socket is live. Test the wall socket with another known working appliance. Expected result: the socket should provide power without interruption.
2. Check the barbecue plug and cable. Make sure the plug is fully inserted and the cord is not twisted, crushed or overheated. Expected result: the indicator light should respond when power reaches the appliance.
3. Look for a separate connection point. Some electric barbecues have a detachable heating element or a connection that must be pushed firmly into place. Refit it only when the appliance is unplugged and cool. Expected result: the light should come on once the connection is secure.
4. Inspect the control setting. Turn the thermostat or control fully off, then back to a cooking setting. Expected result: the power light should illuminate when the appliance is set correctly.
5. Allow for a safety cut-out. If the barbecue was recently overheated, it may need time to cool before it can operate again. Unplug it and leave it to cool completely. Expected result: normal operation may return after cooling.

When to stop using it

Stop using the barbecue immediately if the indicator light remains off and the appliance also shows other signs of damage, such as a loose connector, scorched marks or a damaged cable. Do not open the housing or attempt internal repairs.
