Why does my electric BBQ not heat up when I switch it on?

If your electric barbecue stays cold, start with the safest checks first: confirm it is plugged in properly, the wall socket is working and the appliance is fully assembled as described in the manual. On models with a power indication light, that light should show the appliance is receiving power, while some models also rely on a correctly fitted thermostat and heating element. If there is any sign of damage, burning smell, sparking or a loose power lead, stop using the product immediately and unplug it.

1. Check the mains supply

  1. Plug another appliance into the same socket to confirm the socket is live.
  2. Make sure you are not using an overloaded circuit, as the heating element uses high wattage and the manual warns against sharing the circuit with other high-wattage appliances.
  3. Expected result: the socket supplies power reliably. If it does not, do not use the barbecue until the electrical supply issue is resolved.

2. Check the appliance controls

  1. Turn the thermostat to a higher setting, then wait a few minutes for preheating.
  2. On applicable models, check whether the power indication light comes on and then cycles during heating.
  3. Expected result: the light comes on and the barbecue begins to warm. If the light stays off and the socket is live, stop using the product.

3. Check the assembly and seating of parts

  1. Make sure the heating element, control probe or thermostat are fitted exactly as the instructions describe and are fully seated.
  2. If the grill has been converted between table and stand use, check that all removable parts are correctly reinstalled.
  3. Expected result: the element sits firmly in place and heats normally. If parts feel loose or do not fit securely, stop using the product.

4. Know when to stop

  • Stop using the barbecue if the cord, plug, thermostat or heating element looks damaged.
  • Stop using it if power is present but the unit will not heat after the checks above.

If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
