Why does my electric barbecue not heat up when I switch it on?

If your electric barbecue stays cold, start with the simplest checks first: the power supply, the thermostat setting and whether the appliance is assembled correctly. If there is still no sign of heating after those checks, stop using it and do not continue testing repeatedly.

Check the power first

  1. Confirm the plug is fully inserted into a working socket.
  2. If the socket has a switch, make sure it is on.
  3. Check the lead for visible damage, twisting or a loose connection.

What this means: if the barbecue powers up normally, you should usually see the power indication light come on and then change as the appliance heats. Several supported models include a power indication light and adjustable thermostat, so a dark light can point to a supply issue rather than a cooking issue.

Set the controls correctly

  1. Turn the thermostat to a higher setting and wait a few minutes.
  2. If your model has a detachable thermostat plug or heating element, make sure it is fitted properly before switching on.
  3. On table models, check that the unit is standing flat and stable on its non-slip feet.

What to observe: if the light comes on but the plate still does not warm, the thermostat, heating element or internal safety cut-out may be involved. A healthy appliance usually needs a short warm-up before it reaches cooking temperature.

Look for signs of safe operation

  • The appliance should feel evenly warm after a short preheat.
  • The thermostat light should cycle on and off during use on models with automatic temperature regulation.
  • No unusual smell, smoke or sparking should be present beyond normal first-use odour.

Stop using the barbecue immediately if the cable, plug or housing becomes unusually hot, if you notice smoke, if the barbecue trips the power, or if the heating seems intermittent in a way that suggests an electrical fault.

If the problem is still unresolved, or you are unsure whether it is safe to use, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased. They can explain the available next steps.
