Why is my electric barbecue surface damaged, scratched or peeling?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 3:42 PM

Visible damage to the grill surface is important on an electric barbecue, because it can affect cooking performance and may create a safety issue. Do not continue using the appliance if the coating is peeling, flaking or deeply scratched.

1. Inspect the surface carefully

  1. Switch the barbecue off and let it cool.
  2. Look across the full grill area in good light.
  3. Check for peeling coating, sharp edges, warping or deep scratches.

If the damage is only light marking, the barbecue may still cook normally, but any flaking or exposed material is a concern.

2. Review how it has been cleaned

  1. Check whether abrasive pads, metal tools or harsh cleaners were used.
  2. Make sure food residue is removed only with suitable methods for the appliance.
  3. Avoid scraping the surface in future.

Heavy scrubbing can shorten the life of the cooking surface.

3. Decide when to stop using it

  1. Stop if food touches loose coating or if pieces are lifting from the surface.
  2. Stop if the grill feels rough, unstable or uneven under cookware or food.
  3. Stop if there is smoke or an odd smell from the damaged area.

If the surface damage is more than cosmetic, or if you are unsure whether the barbecue remains safe, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
