Why does my barbecue need longer to cool down than expected?

Electric barbecues can stay hot for a while after use, especially when the grid, water tray or metal parts hold heat. That is normal to a degree, but if the barbecue seems to stay dangerously hot for an unusually long time, stop using it until you understand why.

  1. Switch the barbecue off, unplug it and leave it untouched on a stable surface. Expected result: the temperature should fall gradually without any new heat or smell developing.
  2. Make sure the thermostat is fully turned down and no indicator suggests active heating. Expected result: the appliance should not continue warming after it has been switched off.
  3. Check whether hot parts are trapped under covers, cloths or in a confined space. Expected result: open air circulation should help it cool more normally.
  4. Allow extra time after high-temperature cooking or after using a model with a large stand, windscreen or metal tray, as these parts retain heat. Expected result: cooling should remain steady, even if it is slow.
  5. If the barbecue remains unusually hot, smells burnt or seems to heat itself when switched off, stop using it and contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.

For safety, never carry or store the barbecue until it is completely cool and dry.
