Why does my barbecue have a loose or damaged power cord?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 3:35 PM

If the power cord looks loose, worn or damaged, stop using the barbecue straight away. A damaged mains cable can create electric shock or fire risk and should not be ignored, even if the barbecue still seems to work.

Inspect without touching damaged areas

  1. Unplug the barbecue before you check the cord.
  2. Look for cuts, crushed sections, exposed wire, heat marks or a loose plug.
  3. Check whether the cord is pulled tight, trapped under the unit or tangled around hot parts.

Expected result: the cord should be intact, securely fitted and free from visible damage. If it is not, do not use the product again.

Reduce avoidable strain

  1. Keep the cord away from the cooking surface and any hot metal.
  2. Do not move the barbecue by the cord.
  3. Use a socket close enough that the lead does not need to stretch.

When to stop using it

Stop using the barbecue immediately if the cord is damaged, the plug gets hot, or the appliance trips power when moved. Never repair, tape or shorten the cord yourself. If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
