Why does my espresso machine need flushing before it makes coffee?

Flushing is part of normal setup on several espresso models, because it fills the boiler with water and helps the machine reach the correct operating state. If you skip it, the machine may seem to run but still not brew properly.

What to do before brewing

1. Check that the water tank is filled and correctly seated.
2. Place a jug or container under the steam nozzle and another suitable container under the coffee outlet, if your model uses both.
3. Run plain water through the coffee and steam functions as described in the manual for your model.
4. Wait until the indicator light stops blinking before starting coffee preparation.
5. If the machine has not been used for a few days, flush it again with fresh water before making coffee.

If water runs through cleanly during flushing, the appliance is probably ready for normal use.

What the result means

1. If the flush works and coffee then brews normally, no fault is indicated.
2. If the machine still will not brew after proper flushing, the problem may lie in the coffee dose, filter fit or water path.
3. If no water comes through during flushing, stop and check for a blockage or water supply issue.

When to stop using it

Stop using the espresso machine if it will not flush, leaks from the boiler area or gives off a burnt smell. Do not try to open the boiler or tamper with internal valves.

If the issue remains unresolved, or if safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.

The supplied espresso manuals explicitly state that brewing should not start until the machine has been flushed and the ready light has stopped blinking.
