Why does my kettle keep tripping the power when I switch it on?

If your kettle trips the socket or the circuit as soon as you switch it on, stop using it straight away. A fault in the plug, cord, heating element or socket can cause this symptom, and it is not safe to keep trying it.

Check the supply first

1. Unplug the kettle and plug another low-power appliance into the same socket.
2. If the other appliance also fails, the issue is likely with the socket or household supply, not the kettle.
3. If possible, try the kettle in a different wall socket that you know works.

Expected result: the kettle should power on normally without tripping the supply. If it trips every time in more than one socket, do not use it again.

Look for visible damage

1. Unplug the kettle and inspect the plug, flex and base connection, if fitted.
2. Check for scorching, cracks, loose parts or bent pins.
3. Also make sure the kettle is sitting correctly on its base if it is a cordless model.

Expected result: all parts should look intact and fit securely. Any damage means the kettle should remain unused.

Rule out moisture and overheating

1. Let the kettle cool completely.
2. Empty it, dry the outside and check that no water has entered the base or connector area.
3. Refill to a sensible level and test again only if everything looks dry and undamaged.

Expected result: the kettle should heat steadily. If it trips only when hot, or if you can smell burning, stop using it immediately.
