Why does my kettle only work in one socket?

If the kettle works in one socket but not another, the kettle itself may be fine and the issue may be with the outlet, supply or fit of the plug. Because kettles draw mains power, it is important to test this carefully and stop using the appliance if anything looks unsafe.

1. Try another appliance in the socket that did not work. If that appliance also fails, the socket or circuit is the likely cause.
