If the lamp starts working again after a bulb change, the original bulb was probably the cause. Use this as a sign to check the fit, type and condition of the replacement carefully, because an incorrect or poorly seated bulb can create the same problem again.
Confirm the bulb type
- Check the supplied instructions for the bulb type and rating required by the lamp.
- Make sure the replacement bulb matches that guidance exactly.
- Do not use a bulb with a higher rating than the lamp is designed for.
Fit the bulb correctly
- Switch off, unplug and let the lamp cool.
- Refit the bulb firmly without forcing it.
- Switch the lamp on and observe whether it now comes on immediately and stays on.
Check the old bulb for signs of failure
- Look for a darkened glass area, broken filament or other obvious damage.
- If the old bulb failed suddenly, keep the lamp under observation for repeated cut-outs.
- If a new bulb also fails quickly, stop using the lamp and do not keep trying random bulbs.
If the lamp still only works intermittently after a correct bulb change, the issue may be with the holder or internal wiring.
When to stop using it
Stop using the lamp if the bulb area becomes hot, discolours, flickers or smells unusual. If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
