Why does my decorative lamp only get bright again after I tap or twist the bulb?

If light comes and goes when the bulb is tapped or twisted, the contact in the fitting may be poor. That is worth checking carefully, because a shaky contact can cause heat build-up and intermittent operation.

Inspect the bulb contact

1. Switch off the lamp and unplug it.
2. Let it cool fully before touching the bulb or holder.
3. Remove and refit the bulb carefully, making sure it is aligned correctly and not cross-threaded.
4. If compatible, test the lamp with a known-good replacement bulb.

If the replacement bulb works properly without tapping, the original bulb was likely loose or failing. If the problem continues, the holder or internal contact may be at fault.

When to stop using it

• The lamp flickers, crackles or smells when touched.
• The holder feels hot.
• The bulb sits loosely even after refitting.
• The lamp only works intermittently.

Stop using the lamp immediately if any of those signs are present. If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.

To reduce repeat issues, handle bulbs gently, avoid overtightening and use only the correct fitting for the lamp.
