Why is my hair curler not heating up when I switch it on?

If your hair curler stays cool, start with the power supply and temperature setting, then check whether the appliance has been left to cool down or has switched itself off after use. Do not continue styling if the barrel or clamp does not heat at all, or if the cord, plug or casing feels damaged.

First checks

1. Check the plug and socket. Plug the appliance firmly into a working wall socket. If possible, try a different socket that you know works with another appliance.
2. Confirm the switch or temperature setting. Set the control to the correct heat setting, if your model has one. Wait a few moments to see whether the appliance begins to warm.
3. Look for an automatic shut-off. Some curlers switch off after a period of inactivity. Turn the appliance off, unplug it, then leave it to cool before switching it on again.

What the result means: if the curler heats in another socket, the original socket or supply may be the issue. If it still does not heat anywhere, the appliance may have an internal fault.

Safe stopping point

Stop using the curler immediately if there is any burning smell, visible damage, sparking, or if the plug or cable becomes unusually warm. Do not open the housing or attempt an electrical repair.
