Why does my hair curler give uneven or patchy curls?

Modified on Tue, 25 Aug at 8:02 AM

Uneven curls often come from inconsistent section size, hair that is not fully dry or a curler that is not being held steadily. Start with the styling basics and stop using the appliance if it seems to heat unevenly or behave unpredictably.

Check your sectioning

  1. Divide the hair into similar-sized sections.
  2. Work from the back and move towards the front so each section is handled in the same way.
  3. Comb each section before styling to remove knots and uneven tension.

Expected result: more even sections should produce curls with a similar shape and finish.

Check hair condition and movement

  1. Make sure the hair is dry before curling.
  2. Hold the appliance steady while allowing the hair to wrap evenly around the styling surface.
  3. Avoid rushing the movement or changing direction halfway through a curl.

Expected result: steady movement and dry hair should improve consistency from one curl to the next.

Check the appliance surface

  1. Switch off, unplug and cool the appliance.
  2. Wipe the surface gently with a soft cloth to remove residue.
  3. Inspect for visible wear or damage to the styling surface.

Expected result: a clean, intact surface should help the hair heat more evenly.

Stop using the hair curler if one side feels much hotter than the other, if the body is damaged, or if the cord or plug looks unsafe. If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
