Why does my fan have a loose or damaged power cord?

Modified on Tue, 25 Aug at 7:27 AM

A loose, damaged or warm power cord is a safety concern, not just a nuisance. The Tristar manuals state that a damaged supply cord must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or similarly qualified persons, and that the appliance should never be moved by pulling on the cord or used with the cable wrapped around the body. fileciteturn0file8turn0file7turn0file6

  1. Switch the fan off and unplug it straight away. Expected result: the appliance is fully isolated from the mains.
  2. Inspect only the visible parts of the cord and plug for cuts, flattening, exposed wires, scorching or looseness at the plug body. Expected result: no visible damage and no heat from the plug.
  3. Check whether the cord has been trapped under furniture, twisted tightly or wrapped around the fan. Expected result: the cable lies free and untangled.
  4. If the cord still feels warm, the plug fits loosely or there is any sign of damage, stop using the product immediately. Expected result: a healthy cord should stay cool and intact during normal use.
  5. Do not test the fan again if the cord is damaged or if the plug or socket shows signs of overheating. Expected result: no repeated heating, sparking or cutting out.

Do not tape, splice or repair the cord yourself. If the issue remains unresolved, or the cable is damaged in any way, stop using the fan and contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.
