Why does my hand blender leave food stuck around the blade area?

Modified on Tue, 25 Aug at 5:42 AM

Food can collect around the blade area when the ingredients are too sticky, the batch is too small or the blade is not moving freely through the mixture. A careful change in preparation usually helps, but if the blade area is damaged or blocked in a way you cannot clear safely, stop using the appliance.

  1. Unplug the hand blender and inspect the blade area for residue. Expected result: any visible food should be removable from the accessible parts. If the residue is hard or compacted, clean the removable part carefully.
  2. Use a larger batch or add a little more liquid where the recipe allows. Expected result: the ingredients should circulate around the blade instead of sitting on it. If the batch is too small, the blade can miss the food.
  3. Move the blender slowly through the mixture so food is drawn into the blade area. Expected result: the appliance should pick up the ingredients more evenly. If it only spins in one small spot, the mixture may be too thick.
  4. Check the blade guard and surrounding surfaces for damage or distortion. Expected result: the guard should be smooth and intact. If it is bent, cracked or loose, stop using the product.
  5. Clean and dry all removable parts before refitting them. Expected result: the blade area should remain clear and dry after cleaning. If food keeps trapping in the joint, the attachment may need attention.

Do not touch the blades directly and do not use tools to clear stubborn food from the moving parts. If the issue remains unresolved, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
