Why does my hand blender smell hot or get warm during use?

Modified on Thu, 20 Aug at 3:24 PM

Stop the appliance and let it cool if it becomes hot, then check the load, runtime and ventilation before trying again.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Switch off straight away. Unplug the appliance before checking anything.
  2. Let it cool down fully. A motor can become warm during heavy use, but it should not smell burnt or feel excessively hot.
  3. Reduce the load next time. Use smaller amounts, softer food and more liquid if needed.
  4. Use shorter blending bursts. Continuous operation can overload the motor, especially with thick mixtures.
  5. Check for blocked blade movement. Clear any food that may be restricting the shaft or blade before reusing the appliance.

Expected result

After cooling and using a lighter load, the appliance should run without a hot smell or abnormal heat.

When to stop

Stop using the appliance if there is a burnt smell, smoke, repeated cut-out, visible damage, or if it becomes hot again very quickly.

When to contact support

Contact support if the motor overheats under normal use, if the smell returns after a short run, or if the appliance will not recover after cooling. Do not continue using a visibly damaged appliance.
