Why do my raclette pans smell after washing them?

Modified on Tue, 25 Aug at 3:02 AM

A slight smell after washing usually means detergent, moisture or trapped food residue is still present. The pans should be washed by hand in warm soapy water, rinsed well and dried completely before storage. If the smell is burnt, chemical or comes with flaking coating, stop using the pans.

What to check first

  1. Wash the pans again with a soft sponge or cloth, then rinse them thoroughly. The manuals advise against abrasive cleaners and dishwasher washing for the appliance and accessories.
  2. Dry the pans completely with a clean cloth and leave them open to air-dry for a while before putting them away.
  3. Check whether oil, cheese or sauce was left in corners or around the handles. Small pockets of residue can create a stale smell on the next use.
  4. If the pans were cleaned with strong detergent or a scouring pad, wash them again gently to remove residue and inspect the surface for damage.
  5. If the smell appears only when the pan is heated, consider whether food residue is burning on the surface rather than a cleaning issue.

What the result means

  • If the smell clears after a careful rinse and full drying, it was probably caused by remaining moisture or detergent.
  • If the smell returns every time and the coating looks worn, the pan may no longer be suitable for use.

When to stop using it

Stop using the pans if they smell strongly of burning, chemical residue or if the non-stick surface is damaged. If the problem remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
