Why does my raclette smell a bit hot or smoky the first time I use it?

A slight hot smell or a little smoke during the first use is usually caused by manufacturing residues burning off. It should lessen quickly after the first heating cycle, but any strong, persistent smell, visible sparking or repeated smoking means you should stop using the appliance and unplug it.

  1. Check whether the smell appears only on the first use. Heat the raclette empty for a short period in a well-ventilated room, following the instructions in your manual. If the smell fades after the first run, this is usually normal. If it gets stronger, stop and unplug the appliance.
  2. Inspect the cooking surface and pans for leftover packaging, labels or cleaning residue. Remove anything that should not be heated. If you see melted material or residue, let the appliance cool fully before cleaning it as instructed.
  3. Make sure the cooking plate and pans are dry before use. Moisture can create steam and an unpleasant smell. Dry all parts thoroughly before reassembling them.
  4. Use the appliance on a stable, heat-resistant surface with space around it. Poor ventilation can make first-use smells more noticeable. If the smell is excessive even in a ventilated space, stop using the product.

Stop using the raclette immediately if you notice burning, smoke that does not clear, melting, damaged parts or anything that seems unsafe. If the issue continues after the first proper use, or you are unsure whether the appliance is safe, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.
