What should I do if my iron cord or plug feels hot?

A cord or plug that feels hot is a safety concern, especially on a mains iron. Stop using the appliance at once, switch it off and unplug it if you can do so without touching a damaged area.

1. Check whether the iron is being used with a socket that fits securely and whether the cable is twisted, trapped or under strain. Expected result: the lead should sit freely and the plug should not wobble.
2. Let the iron cool, then inspect the visible cable for cuts, soft spots, scorch marks or exposed wiring. Expected result: the lead should look intact along its full length.
3. Do not rewind the cord around a hot soleplate or use the iron again if heat returns quickly at the plug. Expected result: any normal warmth should disappear when the iron is off and cooled.
4. If the cord or plug still feels hot, smells of burning or looks damaged, stop using the iron permanently until the retailer has advised on next steps.

If the issue remains unresolved, or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased. The manuals warn not to attempt to replace a defective mains lead yourself.
