Why does my raclette cord feel loose or too warm?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 5:22 PM

A loose or warm cord needs immediate attention, because mains-powered tabletop cooking appliances draw continuous power while in use. The product data shows short power cords of 0.8 m or 1 m on the current range, so the cord should sit firmly in the socket and should not become hot in normal use.

  1. Switch the appliance off and unplug it straight away. Let the cord cool before touching it again.
  2. Check whether the plug is fully inserted and whether the socket feels secure. A poor connection can create heat at the plug or cord end.
  3. Inspect the whole visible length of the cord for cuts, kinks, crushed sections or exposed wire. If you see any damage, stop using the appliance immediately.
  4. Make sure the cord is not trapped under the base, pulled tight or touching the hot plate. Reposition it so it hangs freely and does not touch hot surfaces.

If the cord feels hot again during the next use, or if the plug discolours, sparks or smells burnt, stop using the raclette at once. Never tape over a damaged cord, twist it into shape or attempt an electrical repair. If the issue remains unresolved, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
