Why does my torch not switch on after new batteries are fitted?

If a torch still does not switch on after new batteries are fitted, the issue is usually the battery orientation, the contacts or the switch rather than the batteries themselves. Do not keep trying repeatedly if the torch heats up, smells burnt or has any visible battery leakage.

1. Remove the batteries and check that they are inserted the right way round, following the polarity marks inside the compartment. Expected result: correct orientation should restore power if polarity was the issue.
2. Inspect the battery contacts for dirt, white residue or bending. Expected result: clean, properly aligned contacts should allow the torch to work again.
3. Fit the batteries firmly and close the compartment fully. Expected result: the torch should switch on when the button or slider is operated.
4. Try a second set of fresh batteries if the first set may have been depleted. Expected result: the torch should light reliably with a good power source.

Stop using the torch immediately if the batteries are leaking, the compartment is hot or there is corrosion that you cannot safely clean away. Do not open sealed parts or scrape contacts aggressively. If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
