Why does my electric underblanket only warm one side of the bed?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 2:22 PM

If one side of your electric underblanket warms properly but the other side stays cool, the most likely cause is that the blanket is not lying flat, the controller connection is not fully seated, or one heating zone is not reaching the mattress evenly. For two-person models, each side has its own heating zone and controller, so a simple side-by-side check can usually narrow things down quickly. Tristar underblankets are machine washable and have detachable controllers, with overheat protection built in.

Check the setup first

  1. Switch the blanket off and unplug it from the mains.
  2. Remove the bedding and check that the underblanket is spread flat, without folds, creases or thick items underneath.
  3. Make sure the controller plug is fully connected to the blanket and not strained by the bedding.
  4. On a two-person model, compare both sides separately, then adjust the controls and see whether one side responds normally.

If the warm area improves after flattening the blanket or reseating the connector, the issue is usually caused by poor contact with the mattress rather than a fault in the heating system.

What the result means

  • Both sides warm after adjustment, the blanket was likely bunched or partially lifted from the mattress.
  • Only one side still stays cold, the heating zone, controller or connection may need further inspection.
  • The blanket heats unevenly in the same place every time, stop using it and do not continue to sleep on it until it has been checked.

When to stop using it

Stop using the underblanket immediately if you notice scorching, a burnt smell, visible damage, sparking, repeated cut-outs, or if any section becomes hot in an unusual way. Do not fold, pin or tuck the blanket tightly while it is powered on.

Next steps if it still is not right

If the problem remains unresolved, or you are unsure whether the blanket is safe to use, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased. They can explain the available next steps.
