Why does my electric blanket stop heating during use?

If the blanket starts warm and then goes cold, treat that as a fault until you have checked the basic setup. The manuals for these blankets include overheat protection and, on some models, automatic shut-off or timer functions, so a drop in heat can be linked to the settings or to a safety stop.

1. Look at the controller setting and confirm the blanket has not been switched off, timed out or reduced to a low setting. Expected result: the chosen setting should remain active. If the display or lights show the blanket has stopped, do not keep using it until you understand why.
2. Check whether the blanket has folded, creased or been covered by cushions, bedding or other items. Expected result: the blanket should lie flat and uncompressed. If heat is being blocked or the blanket is heavily creased, stop using it.
3. Make sure the controller and connector are fully seated and have not worked loose during the night or while moving the blanket. Expected result: the connection should be firm throughout use. If the connection is unstable, stop using the product.
4. Let the blanket cool, then inspect it for any signs of overheating, smell, discolouration or damage. Expected result: no abnormal smell, marks or hot spots should be present. If there is any sign of overheating, stop using the product immediately.
5. If the blanket still stops heating without a clear setting change, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased and do not use it again until it has been checked.

Do not attempt to bypass any safety feature, and do not keep restarting a blanket that repeatedly cuts out. Overheat protection is there to reduce risk, so repeated shutdowns or unexplained heat loss mean the product needs attention.
