Why does my torch get hot during use?

A torch should not become uncomfortably hot in normal use. If it does, switch it off at once and let it cool before you touch it again, especially if the batteries may be leaking or the casing looks damaged.

Check for the simplest causes

1. Remove the torch from use and let it cool fully.
2. Check whether the light has been left on accidentally for a long period.
3. Insert a fresh set of batteries if the torch runs hot again after cooling.

If the torch behaves normally after cooling or battery replacement, the issue may have been temporary.

Inspect the casing and battery compartment

1. Look for swelling, leakage, scorch marks or a strong smell.
2. Check whether the batteries are the correct type and fitted as marked.
3. Make sure the battery compartment closes properly.

If any damage is visible, stop using the torch.

Decide when to stop

1. Do not continue testing a torch that overheats repeatedly.
2. Do not open the housing or attempt a repair.
3. Keep it away from children until the issue is resolved.
