Why does my sandwich maker not close properly?

If the lid will not close properly, the filling is often too thick or the bread is not positioned centrally. Stop using the appliance if the lid feels forced, the lock will not engage, or you see damage to the hinge or latch.

1. Open the sandwich maker fully and check that no food residue, crumbs or stuck cheese is preventing the plates from meeting. Clean only when unplugged and cool. The expected result is a cleaner closing path.
2. Place one sandwich in the centre of the lower plate and avoid overfilling. The expected result is that the lid settles down evenly without pressure.
3. Check whether the bread slices are too large for the plate size. Some models have a compact baking surface, while others are larger, so oversized bread can stop the lid from closing. The expected result is better fit with smaller slices.
4. If your model has a safety lock, close the lid gently and secure it only when the sandwich is correctly placed. Do not force it. The expected result is a closed lid with no strain on the latch.
5. If the lid still does not close, or it springs open again during use, stop using the appliance and ask the retailer or store where it was purchased for advice.
