Why does my sandwich maker leave a burnt patch on one corner only?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 1:07 PM

If one corner browns or burns faster than the rest, the appliance may be sitting unevenly, the filling may be spread too close to one edge, or the plates may not be heating evenly. Stop using the sandwich maker if the heating pattern changes suddenly, the casing becomes distorted, or the unit smells scorched.

Check the likely causes

  1. Confirm the worktop is level. Non-slip feet help stability, but a sloping or soft surface can shift the contact between plate and bread.
  2. Spread the filling evenly. Thick filling near one corner can hold the bread open and create a hotter, darker patch.
  3. Compare a second sandwich. Use the same bread and filling but keep it centred on the plate. If the burn mark moves with the food, the issue may be loading rather than heating.
  4. Inspect the plates for residue. Baked-on crumbs can create local hot spots.

How to read the outcome

If centred sandwiches brown more evenly, the earlier issue was probably placement or filling balance. If the same corner always burns, even with careful loading, the appliance may not be distributing heat properly.

When to stop using it

Stop using the sandwich maker if one area becomes much hotter than the rest, the plates look warped, or the burnt patch keeps returning. In that case, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased and explain the fault pattern.

Simple prevention

  • Do not press down hard on the lid while cooking.
  • Keep bread slices centred.
  • Clean the plates after cooling to prevent baked-on crumbs.
