Why is my sandwich maker hard to clean after use?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 1:06 PM

If the sandwich maker is hard to clean, the usual cause is cooked-on filling, grease or residue around the plate edges. Clean it only after it has cooled fully, and stop using the appliance if the non-stick coating is damaged or the housing shows heat marks.

  1. Unplug the appliance and let it cool with both halves open. Cleaning a warm appliance can smear residue and increase burn risk. Expected result: the surfaces should be safe to touch before cleaning. If they are still unusually hot, wait longer.
  2. Wipe the plates with a damp cloth or soft brush. Focus on the corners, hinge side and outer edges where food often collects. Expected result: most residue should lift without scrubbing. If it does not, continue.
  3. Check whether food has overflowed onto the housing or locking area. Stubborn deposits here can affect opening and closing next time. Expected result: the appliance should be clean around the edges and lock. If residue is stuck in a way you cannot remove safely, stop using the product.
  4. Avoid metal tools, scouring pads and abrasive cleaners. These can damage the non-stick coating and make future cleaning harder. Expected result: the surface should stay smooth and easier to wipe next time. If the coating has already flaked or scratched deeply, stop using it.

If the appliance remains difficult to clean, or if there is any sign of surface damage or overheating, stop using the sandwich maker and contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.
