Why is my hair curler getting too hot on the outside?

Modified on Tue, 25 Aug at 8:37 AM

If the body of your hair curler feels hotter than expected, stop styling and check for blocked airflow, incorrect use or a fault. A warm appliance is normal during use, but the handle, cord or casing should not become uncomfortably hot.

Checks to carry out

  1. Make sure the curler is resting correctly. Use the stand or a safe heat-resistant surface if your model provides one.
  2. Look for hair or debris around the heated area. After unplugging and cooling, remove any trapped hair with care.
  3. Use smaller hair sections. Overloading the curler can make it work harder and increase heat build-up.
  4. Check the room conditions. Very warm surroundings can make the appliance feel hotter than normal.

What you should observe: the outside may feel warm, but it should not become painful to touch or cause the appliance to behave unpredictably. If cooling the appliance and using smaller sections improves the problem, the cause may be normal heat build-up.

Stop using immediately if

Stop using the curler if the casing becomes very hot, the cable softens, there is a melting smell, or you notice smoke, sparking or scorch marks. Do not touch the barrel until it has cooled.

If the issue remains unresolved, or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
