Why does my hair straightener not stay shut when I lock it?

If the straightener does not stay shut, the storage lock may not be engaged properly or the plates may not be aligned. Check this before storing the appliance, but stop using it if the plates do not close evenly or if the lock feels broken.

Check the storage lock

1. Make sure the appliance is cool and unplugged.
2. Close the plates gently.
3. Engage the lock function fully, if your model has one.

If the straightener stays closed after that, the issue was likely the lock position.

Check plate alignment

1. Look at the plates from the front and the side.
2. Make sure nothing is trapped between them.
3. Open and close the handles a few times without forcing them.

If the plates do not meet properly, the appliance may need attention.

Check for damage

1. Inspect the hinge, lock and plate edges for wear or bending.
2. Do not press harder to make the lock hold.
3. Never use the appliance if the plates sit crooked or unstable.
