Why does my hair straightener switch off by itself?

Modified on Tue, 25 Aug at 8:17 AM

If your hair straightener switches off during use, it may be reacting to its automatic shut-off feature, overheating protection or a loose power connection. Stop using it if it turns off repeatedly without a clear reason or if it feels too hot to handle.

Check for automatic shut-off

  1. Consider whether the appliance has been left idle for a while.
  2. Turn it back on and use it normally.
  3. See whether it stays on while you are actively styling.

If it only switches off after a period of inactivity, that behaviour may be expected.

Check for overheating

  1. Make sure the plates are clean and nothing is blocking the movement.
  2. Do not cover the appliance or place it on soft fabric while it is hot.
  3. Allow it to cool completely before switching it back on.

If the appliance shuts down again soon after cooling, stop using it.

Check the connection

  1. Inspect the plug and cord for looseness or damage.
  2. Try another wall socket.
  3. Move the cord gently near the entry point and see whether power cuts in and out.

If power cuts in and out when the cord moves, or if the appliance becomes unusually hot, stop using it immediately. If the issue remains unresolved, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
