Why does my hair straightener not switch on?

If your hair straightener does not switch on, start with the simplest safety checks: the socket, the plug, the cord and the on/off control. Do not keep trying it if you see damage, smell burning or notice the cord moving sharply at the entry point.

Start with the socket and plug

1. Plug the appliance firmly into a working wall socket.
2. Try another socket that you know works with a different appliance.
3. Check whether the socket has been switched off or tripped.

If the straightener powers up in another socket, the original socket was likely the issue.

Check the controls

1. Make sure the appliance is turned on using the on/off switch or button.
2. If the product has a lock function, unlock it before trying to change the temperature.
3. Wait briefly for any heat indicator to show that the appliance is warming.

If nothing happens, the appliance may not be receiving power.

Inspect the cord and body

1. Unplug the appliance and allow it to cool if it feels warm.
2. Check the cord for twisting, fraying or a loose connection at the appliance end.
3. Look for scorch marks, melting or a damaged plug.
