Why is my water detector not reacting to a small leak?

Modified on Tue, 25 Aug at 3:27 AM

If your water detector does not alarm during a small leak, treat that as a safety concern until you have checked the installation, the sensor surface and the power condition. A very small leak can sometimes be missed if the detector is not positioned where water reaches it quickly.

Check the sensor position

  1. Confirm the detector is placed on a flat, stable surface where leaking water would actually reach the sensor.
  2. Move it closer to the most likely leak path, such as beneath a pipe joint, appliance connection or sink trap, without placing it where normal splashes are constant.
  3. Make sure the sensor area is facing the expected water path and is not blocked by dust, tape or packaging material.

Expected result: after repositioning, a small amount of water should be detected more quickly. If there is still no reaction, continue.

Check the sensor and battery condition

  1. Wipe the sensor area clean and dry. Residue or dirt can reduce sensitivity.
  2. Check whether the detector gives any low battery indication, if your model has one.
  3. Replace the battery only if the product instructions tell you it is user-replaceable and you can do so safely.

Expected result: the detector should operate normally with a clean sensor and adequate power. If it still does not respond, the unit may be faulty or unsuitable for the chosen location.

Stop using it if safety is uncertain

  1. If the detector has visible damage, moisture inside the case or no response even after cleaning and repositioning, stop using the product immediately.

If the issue remains unresolved, or you are not confident the detector will warn you in time, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased for further advice. Source basis: product feed: FWA-18210, FWA-18400; generic troubleshooting.
