Why does my water detector beep when I press it, but not during a leak?

If the detector reacts to a manual check but not to real moisture, the sensor may be too dry, incorrectly positioned or partly blocked. A successful self-check only proves the unit can sound, not that it is currently placed where water will reach it. The product data identifies these as indoor water alarms for kitchen and washroom use.

1. Compare the test situation with the real one

  1. Think about where you tested the unit and where the leak occurred.
  2. If the detector was not at floor level or near the leak path, water may not have reached the sensor.
  3. Move it nearer to the risk area if the manual for your model allows relocation.

Expected result: the sensor is placed where water is likely to touch it first.

2. Check for barriers and contamination

  1. Look for tape, dust, scale or packaging material covering the sensing area.
  2. Clean the outside gently with a dry cloth.
  3. Make sure the detector is standing level and not trapped on a raised edge.

Expected result: the sensor is unobstructed and ready to react.

3. Stop using it if actual leaks still do not trigger an alarm

  1. If the detector remains silent in the presence of water, stop trusting it for leak detection.
  2. Do not use it as your only warning if it has failed a real-world check.
  3. Contact the retailer or store where you bought it for the next steps.

A unit that only works in a manual test may still be unsuitable for protecting the area you need to monitor.
