Why is my wired doorbell only working sometimes?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 8:02 PM

Intermittent operation usually points to a loose wire, a worn bell push, moisture at the button or a connection that is just making contact. Do not keep using the product if it becomes warm, crackles, smells burnt or cuts in and out near exposed wiring.

  1. Press the bell push several times and note whether the chime works on some presses but not others. If it is inconsistent, continue with the next check.
  2. Check the bell push and cable connections for movement. A wire that shifts when touched can interrupt the circuit. Tighten any accessible terminal screws only if this can be done safely.
  3. Look at the bell push face and surrounding area for rain ingress, condensation or dirt. If the symptom is worse after wet weather, dry the area thoroughly and retest once it is completely dry.
  4. Test the doorbell with the wiring in its normal position, then again after gently repositioning the visible cable. If the chime responds differently, the cable route or a hidden break is likely involved.
  5. If the doorbell continues to work only occasionally, stop using it and contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.

Intermittent faults are often caused by movement, corrosion or water getting where it should not be. Regularly check that the bell push is secure and that the cable is not pinched by the doorframe, as repeated strain can make the fault worse over time.
