If your electric blanket stays cold, start with the connection and controller before assuming the heating system has failed. A loose connector, an unselected heat setting or a delayed warm-up can all make the blanket seem inactive at first. For these blankets, the manuals also warn that a damaged cord, controller or heating wire means you should stop using the product immediately.
- Check that the controller and blanket connector are fully joined, then switch the product off and on again. Expected result: the blanket should begin warming after a few minutes. If the connector was loose, the heat may return straight away. If the connector will not sit firmly, stop using the blanket.
- Confirm that you have selected a heat setting and, where applicable, allowed the preheat or warm-up time to finish. Expected result: warmth should become noticeable after the normal heating period. If the display or indicator does not respond, stop using the product.
- Try a different mains socket only if the cord and plug look undamaged. Expected result: the blanket should power up normally in the new socket. If the plug, cord or controller appears damaged, stop using the blanket immediately.
- Unplug the blanket and inspect it for folding, creasing or visible wear. These products should be used flat and checked before each use. Expected result: the blanket should heat evenly once laid out correctly. If you see damage, stop using the product.
- If the blanket still does not heat, or if you are uncertain about safe use, stop using it and contact the retailer or store where it was purchased for the next steps.
