Why does my contact grill not switch on when I plug it in?

If your contact grill stays completely off, start with the simplest checks before assuming a fault. On these grills, the power and ready lights should normally provide clear signs that the appliance has power, so a total lack of lights usually points to the supply, the plug, or the wall socket rather than the cooking plates themselves. The appliance is mains powered, so stop using it straight away if the cable, plug or base shows damage, smells hot or feels loose.

1. Check that the plug is fully inserted into a working wall socket. If possible, test the socket with another appliance that you know works.
   Expected result: the socket should supply power and the grill should show its indicator lights. If the socket is dead, use a different socket.
2. Inspect the power cord for visible damage, kinks near the plug, or a loose connection at the appliance.
   Expected result: the cord should sit securely and look undamaged. If it is frayed, crushed or warm to the touch, stop using the grill.
3. Make sure the grill is standing on a stable, flat surface and has space around it. Some models are designed with a floating lid, safety lock and indicator lights, so a lid that is not fully positioned should not prevent power, but poor placement can make the appliance seem unstable during testing.
4. If the grill still shows no sign of life, try a second wall socket in a different room to rule out a local supply issue.
   Expected result: the lights should come on when power is available. If they do not, the appliance may need checking by the retailer.

Stop using the product immediately if you notice burning, sparking, melted plastic or repeated tripping of the electricity supply. If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
