A light smell or a little smoke on the first use can happen when a contact grill is new, but it should fade quickly. Keep the room ventilated and watch the appliance closely, because persistent smoke, strong plastic odour or visible melting means you should stop using it straight away.
What to do first
- Remove all packaging, stickers, protective film and any loose paper from the grill.
- Place the appliance on a stable, level surface with space around it.
- Open the lid and preheat it empty for a short period if the instructions for your model allow this. A new appliance can give off a temporary odour while protective residues burn off.
- Check whether any grease, dust or packaging material is left on the plates or around the edges.
What to observe
- A brief smell that weakens after the first few uses is usually not a fault.
- Smoke that gets heavier, smells burnt in a sharp way, or comes from the power cord, switch or base is not normal.
- If you see blistering, discolouration or residue melting on any part, stop using the grill.
Safe point to stop
Do not use the grill if the smell is strong enough to make the appliance uncomfortable to stand near, if the smoke does not reduce after a short preheat, or if the outside parts become unusually hot. Let it cool completely before checking again. If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
