Why is my contact grill smoking the first time I use it?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 5:47 PM

A slight smell or a small amount of smoke on the first use can happen when a new grill heats for the first time, especially if protective residues, dust or manufacturing traces are being burnt off. That should be brief and should reduce with ventilation. If the smoke is thick, persistent or sharp-smelling, stop using the product and check for anything left on the plates or around the appliance before trying again.

  1. Switch the grill off, unplug it and let it cool fully.
Expected result: the smoke should clear once heat is removed.
  2. Wipe the plates and visible surfaces with a soft, damp cloth, then dry them carefully. Do not use abrasive cleaners or metal tools on non-stick surfaces. fileciteturn0file8turn0file2
Expected result: the surfaces should feel clean and smooth.
  3. Before the next use, place the grill in a well-ventilated room and keep it on a stable, heat-resistant surface with space around it.
Expected result: any new smell should be much weaker and short-lived.
  4. Run the grill empty only for the shortest practical preheat needed to verify whether the smoke is disappearing.
Expected result: a brief trace of odour may remain, but it should not become heavy smoke.

Stop using the product immediately if smoke is accompanied by sparking, melting, or a burning electrical smell. If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
