Why does my hand blender overheat after a short time?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 3:07 PM

If the hand blender becomes hot very quickly, treat it as a sign of overload rather than something to ignore. This usually happens when the mixture is too thick, the appliance is used continuously for too long or the blades are being held under heavy pressure.

  1. Switch off the appliance, unplug it and let it cool fully. Do not test it again while it is still warm.
  2. Review the recipe and reduce the amount of food in the container. Smaller batches are easier on the motor.
  3. Blend in short bursts with pauses in between. Continuous running can overheat the motor, especially with dense mixtures.
  4. Move the blade end gently through the food instead of keeping it pressed hard against the bottom.
  5. Check for blocked ventilation around the motor unit and remove any residue on the outside with a dry cloth only.

The expected result is that the appliance remains only mildly warm and completes the task without cutting out. Stop using the hand blender if it heats up again very quickly, if it smells burnt, or if the casing is too hot to hold comfortably. Do not put it under running water or try to open the motor unit. If the issue remains unresolved or safe use is uncertain, contact the retailer or store where the product was purchased.
