Why does batter stick to my crêpe maker plate?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 2:57 PM

If batter is sticking, the plate is usually not hot enough, is too dry, or has residue from previous use. These crêpe makers have a non-stick plate, but the manuals still recommend a light coating of oil or cooking spray for best release, especially before first use or after cleaning.

  1. Preheat the appliance fully until the ready light goes out. If you add batter too early, it can bond to the surface and tear when lifted.
  2. Check whether the plate is clean and free from baked-on residue. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth once it has cooled slightly. If residue remains, use warm water with a little detergent and a non-abrasive pad only.
  3. Lightly oil the cooking surface or use a small amount of cooking spray before the next crêpe. The observation to look for is whether the crêpe releases more easily after this step.
  4. Use the wooden spatula or T-stick supplied with the product, and avoid metal utensils. Metal can damage the non-stick coating and make sticking worse over time.
  5. If batter still sticks badly even after proper preheating and light greasing, stop using the appliance if the coating is peeling, scratched or damaged. Contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.

A small amount of sticking on the very first crêpe can happen while the plate finishes stabilising, but repeated sticking usually means the surface needs cleaning, light greasing or closer temperature control.
