Why does my waffle maker smell hot the first few times I use it?

A mild warm smell on first use can be normal, but it should fade quickly. If the smell is strong, metallic or turns into smoke, unplug the appliance and stop using it.

1. Run the waffle maker only as long as needed for a short test heat-up. A lingering smell that gets stronger with time is more concerning than a brief odour at the start.
