Why does the power light stay off on my waffle maker?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 2:47 PM

If the power light does not come on, start with the outlet, plug and cord. A waffle maker that shows no sign of power may simply not be connected correctly, but any damage, smell or heat at the plug means you should stop using it.

What to check

  1. Check that the wall socket works by plugging in another device. If the other device works, the socket is likely fine.
  2. Unplug the waffle maker and inspect the plug and cord for visible damage, twisting or loose connections. If you see damage, do not use the appliance again.
  3. Reconnect the plug firmly and try again in the same socket. If there is still no power light, move to a different known-working socket.
  4. Look for any sign of moisture around the plug or socket. If present, leave everything unplugged and dry before making another attempt.

Expected result

The power light should illuminate when the appliance is connected correctly and switched on, showing that it is receiving power.

When to stop using it

Stop using the waffle maker immediately if the cord, plug or socket area is damaged, warm, discoloured or smells burnt. If the light remains off after safe checks, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.

Helpful prevention

  • Unplug by holding the plug, not by pulling the cord.
  • Keep the lead away from hot plates and sharp bends.
  • Allow the appliance to cool before moving it.
