Why does my waffle maker smoke a little when I bake?

Modified on Mon, 24 Aug at 2:47 PM

A small amount of smoke can come from residue, grease or excess batter, but continuous smoke is not normal. If the smoke is heavy, the smell is sharp, or the appliance begins to spark, stop using it at once.

What to check

  1. Unplug the waffle maker and let it cool. Then inspect the plates for leftover batter, oil or crumbs that may be burning on the surface.
  2. Check whether the batter is spilling onto the outer edge or hinge area. Even a small overflow can smoke when it heats again.
  3. Use only a light coating if your recipe or appliance care notes call for it. Too much fat can smoke before the waffle is ready.
  4. After cleaning, dry all surfaces thoroughly before the next use. Moist residue mixed with heat and crumbs can produce smoke or a burnt smell.

Expected result

The appliance should produce little or no smoke during normal baking, apart from a brief trace when starting with a new or recently cleaned unit.

When to stop using it

Stop using the waffle maker if smoke continues after cleaning, if there is visible scorching, or if the cord, plug or housing appears damaged. If the issue stays unresolved, contact the retailer or store where it was purchased.

Helpful prevention

  • Clean the plates gently after each use once cool.
  • Keep batter away from the outside edges.
  • Do not use metal utensils on the coating.
