Why does my waffle maker make a clicking or buzzing sound while heating?

A faint click can happen as the thermostat regulates temperature, but loud, repeated buzzing or crackling is not normal. If the sound is new, heavy or linked to smell or smoke, unplug the waffle maker and stop using it.

What to check

1. Listen carefully to the timing of the sound. A brief click at heat-up or cool-down can be normal on many thermostatically controlled appliances.
2. Check whether the waffle maker is sitting firmly on the worktop. Vibration from a loose surface can make normal heating sounds seem louder than they are.
3. Look for crumbs, dried batter or residue around the plates and hinge. Residue can sometimes crackle as it heats.
4. If the buzzing continues throughout use or becomes harsh, stop testing and do not try to open the housing.

Expected result

You may hear a short click as the appliance regulates heat, but it should not make ongoing mechanical noise, sparking sounds or a burning odour.

Stop using the waffle maker if the sound gets stronger, if the appliance vibrates unusually, or if there is any sign of electrical fault. Contact the retailer or store where it was purchased if the noise remains unresolved.
