Why does my toaster still have crumbs inside after emptying the tray?

It is common for some crumbs to remain inside the toaster even after the tray has been emptied, especially after frequent use. If crumbs are burnt onto the inside, or if you can smell smoke or see damage, stop using the appliance until it has cooled and been checked safely.

1. Unplug the toaster and let it cool completely. Expected result: you should only clean internal crumbs when the appliance is cold.
2. Remove the crumb tray and shake out loose crumbs into a bin. Expected result: most debris should come away from the tray itself.
3. Turn the toaster gently upside down over a bin and tap it lightly. Expected result: loose crumbs may fall out from the slot area.
4. Wipe the outside with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Expected result: the casing should be free of visible debris.
5. If crumbs seem stuck inside, or if you are unsure whether residue has damaged the heating parts, stop using the toaster and contact the retailer or store where it was purchased for the available next steps.

Never use a fork, knife or any sharp-edged utensil inside the toaster, and never immerse the appliance in water.
