Why does my toaster smell burnt or smoke a little when I use it?

Modified on Thu, 20 Aug at 3:42 PM

A slight smell during first use or after crumbs have built up can happen, but visible smoke, repeated burning smell or unusual heat is not normal. Turn the toaster off and clean out loose crumbs only when it is unplugged and cool.

1. Check for crumbs

  1. Unplug the toaster.
  2. Let it cool fully.
  3. Empty the crumb tray if fitted and remove loose crumbs from around the slots.

Expected result: The smell should reduce once crumbs are removed and the toaster is used again.

When to stop: Stop using the appliance if smoke continues, if the smell is strong, or if the housing becomes very hot.

When to contact support: Contact support if the smell or smoke keeps returning after cleaning and a short test use.
