Why are my toast slices coming out too dark even on a low setting?

If your toast is browning too quickly, the setting may be too high for the bread type, or crumbs and residue may be affecting the heat pattern. Stop using the toaster if the bread is scorching, the appliance smells burnt, or the casing becomes unusually hot.

  1. Turn the browning control down one step and toast a single slice. Expected result: the bread should come out lighter.
  2. Check that the crumb tray is empty and fully in place. Expected result: excess crumbs should no longer affect toasting.
  3. Use bread that is similar in thickness to a standard slice, and avoid very thin slices. Expected result: the bread should sit centrally in the slot and toast more evenly.
  4. If the toaster has reheat or defrost functions, make sure they are not being used by mistake. Expected result: the cycle should match the bread you are toasting.
  5. If toast remains too dark even after reducing the setting, stop using the appliance and let it cool before any further inspection.

If the problem continues, contact the retailer or store where the toaster was purchased. A fault in the thermostat or control system may be the cause.

For day-to-day use, start at a lower setting and adjust gradually, especially with toasted bread, thin slices or lighter breads.
